Diaries, 1832 Nov.-1849 Feb., of Henry A. Patterson, kept during his boyhood in Suckasunny (Succasunna), New Jersey, and in New York City where he was a clerk with W. N. Seymour & Co., in 1848 founding the firm of Patterson Brothers with his brother Turner, hardware merchants. Patterson writes of daily activities at home and at work, social activities, visits with friends and family, sports and amusements, gardening, family news, his interest in religion, attendance at religious services and various churches, frequently in the company of his wife, Eleanor; his interests as president of the Jefferson Literary Club; a voyage taken to Key West, Florida, in January of 1843, aboard the Brigantine "Emeline," his stay there; and of changes, improvements, and current events in New York City.
